    50,000 wooden coffee stir sticks woven in place and held by tension

    The Cairns Piece was a commissioned site-specific installation created in the Cairns Botanic garden visitor center. The work was created over the course of a week long residency sponsored by the Cairns Festival and the Tanks Art Centre. The piece was woven in the image of a basket with a handle. The basic form is a response to depictions of aboriginal baskets of the area known as “Dilly Bags”. While not a literal depiction of these bags the work is a response to the place and people of Far Norh Queensland Australia
