Since returning from Brimingham, in October, I have been squirreled away in a temporary shop/storage space working on a new outdoor work. I was slated to have the piece powder coated this week in advance of the arrival of my son, but life had different plans and I am taking a brief paternity leave before diving back into the home stretch next week. The piece will ultimately be powder coated in a metallic grey finish and placed in the traffic circle of North Charleston’s city hall. The full story on how this came about is actually stranger than one might think, I will save the full rundown for after the final installation. In short though this is vast upgrade and replacement for my 2007-2009 work “Big Water bottle basket” which was in the City of North Charleston’s permanent collection until Late 2011. It is possible that Big Water Bottle’s current whereabouts are unknown.
The piece is aproximately 12 feet tall and about 6-7feet wide. I am working on it in this space that I’ve just got for the purpose of producing this structure. After years of not needing to work in any one place and only keeping a storage space rather than a working space, it was kind of funny to take on one of the empty storage units at the storage center to actually make something. In the coming weeks when I finish fabricating I will be delivering and installing the piece at which point I’ll post a full image gallery and explanation on the site.
