So the Have Sticks Will Travel Finale is now installed at The McColl Center and will remain on view through January 8 2011, I will remain in residence here through Mid November. I can’t say that I feel any particular sense of relief as I just got word that I am one of three finalist for a small temporary outdoor public art project which may mean that at some point in early-mid 2011 I will get to see my field of good fortune installation realized. Now that the work on the show is done I can begin the other work I have planned for my time at the McColl Center for Visual Arts. It is a strange feeling to be back at an official artist residency as I have not been to one since my marathon back to back residency binge in 2007. It is hard to explain to people on the outside but being at an artist-in-residence combines all the excitement and energy of a new school or town experience but with none of the same awkwardness and pressure. To know that ones only roll for the next 3 months is to make whatever work one feels in necessary for their studio practice is the gift of time that residencies provide to artists like me whose practice is rooted in the artist-in-residence tradition.
