By the end of the day yesterday, with a little help from my wife Brooke, and my friend Charlie Walters, I was able to complete four of the six fortunes in the field. My day started with pounding 24 poles which serve as the mounts for the fortune signs, then working on getting the signs secured and mounted. I am a little bit sore after the long day, but with some help today should be finished with the install. So far I am very pleased that the piece is looking almost exactly like the proposal images and other models that were made. It was hard to know for sure how the final pieces would look once they were in place, but that is part of the reason I like working this way, I always get a chance to feel out and respond to the place where I am installing work. One of the more interesting and unexpected immediate responses to the pieces, was the bird’s reactions. As soon as I would finish pounding a pole or mounting a fortune the birds in the park would swoop in right away and begin fighting with each other over perching rights to the various pieces. I also had several really great interactions with people who had come to walk their dogs through the park saying they were really excited to see something new in the park. I am looking forward to knocking out the rest of the heavy lifting today, so I can focus on documentation, and actually get a moment to enjoy the park myself.
