  • Cairns interrupted

In total what would have taken one 24hour block of travel to reach Cairns stretched into two. My first connection in Dallas narrowly missed my flight to Australia, stranding me and about 30 other Qantas passangers in Dallas for 24hours. With 12hours to kill before another 20hours of flying I decided to rent a car amd take on the Dallas Ft worth Museum offerings. Needless to say 5 museums in 9hours was just what I needed. It not only provided a range of viewing options from Erwin Wurm’s recent work, to the outstanding collection at the Dallas Museum of art , to The Nasher sculpture center and the awesomeness of the ft worth modern collection and a Freud show they had, to some wicked little gems in the Kimbell, it was just an all around art binge experience.

a highlight from the Kimbell was this Chinese bell from the Late Zhou period. It features one of my favorite surface patterns the “Late Zhou Hook”

A jaw dropping painting tucked away in the Dallas Museum of art by Leon Fredric could have been painted yesterday it seemed so resonant with contemporary painting.

Another excellent highlight from the Ft worth modern was this smoking cowboy who appeared from within this Richard Serra, and was in view just long enough for me to catch him.

After 22hours of flying and customs I arrived at my destination, although my mind is still somewhere over the ocean, and my body feels like lead.

With a day shaved off of my original schedule yesterday became load in and later today will begin my first day. I’ve got about 9 solid work days until the piece opens. The important things are all in place though: I am here, my bags and apron are here, and i’ve got a place to stay within in walking distance of the center. That walk by the way includes a detour through a rainforest. Oh did I mention there is a coffee shop next door to the space I’m working in. cheers mate.
