After more than a year of construction delays, the grand opening of South Carolina’s newly renovated State Museum and currently under construction planetarium is fast approaching. As such the curator of visual art Paul Matheny has organized a group show of South Carolina affiliated artists to populate an exhibition appropriately titled “Building a Universe”. While no requirement to engage a specific theme was requested or imposed I immediately knew I wanted to create a piece which reflected both the cosmic images that the newly installed observatory will bring as well as the architecture of the planetarium. While I traditionally get images or visit a space ahead of the show, one of the more interesting images I received in the lead up to the show came from the curator. It was his image of the planetarium dome under construction that really was the impetus for this work. I filed it away in the back of my mind knowing it would serve as a source for the currently in process SC Museum Piece. Now to get some much needed espresso from local purveyors drip coffee, and prepare for tomorrow’s construction push. By construction push I mean mine and the contractors working around the clock to finish ahead of the August 16 opening.
