I think today is some sort of midpoint of productivity in my residency. I have about one uninterrupted week left before I begin teaching a print class for middle schoolers, about two weeks before I go back to work as an art handler at the museum, and three weeks before i head to Australia to build at the Cairns festival. I guess it’s time to see the finish line on Artspace. I am happy that the walls are laid in, the crate is placed and being secured with sticks, and the column has been started. This coming week The Make ends Meet show will close at Flanders gallery and I can strike that piece and bring the materials over here. I am hoping to get enough of the stick structure laid in that I can easily integrate the sticks and sleeves from Flanders into the residency piece.
As with the tensioning of the sleeves in the previous 5 installations, the braided aluminum cables and ferrules have become just as interesting visually as they are structurally in tensioning the sleeves and sticks. I am begining to enjoy the crimping and tensioning as much as any other aspect of the work. It does give me options for some other new pieces I am working on for the future. At the present though I need to stay the course if I want to cover more ground/air at Artspace.
I was able to complete the two coffee grounds wall drawings without too much incident. It is nice to see another variation of this work realized after January’s version down at Coastal on the smooth wall. This brick wall provided a particularly nice grid underneath the grounds. The only down side was the speed at which the brick chewed up the vinyl gloves when I was rubbing the walls.
