It sometimes takes getting out of my own environment and being somewhere new to notice the details of the built world that I would otherwise miss in daily life. The process of being deposited somewhere foreign over the years and then immediately beginning a routine of installation work helps ground me. Another of the things that grounds me is having a camera with me to snap things I find to be interesting forms of accidental or permanent public art. The bulk of these images dating back as far as 2006 can be found in this flickr photo set https://www.flickr.com/photos/jonathan_brilliant/sets/72157600052822729
In the earliest ones I was training my eye on anything that struck my fancy, but in recent years I am increasingly drawn to the orange and white safety materials we use to keep people out of certain areas. I especially love the shapes and compositions they create when they are at rest. These casual public sculptures were everywhere in Baton Rouge, and especially new x pattern arrangement works.
