I am 3 days into what should be about a 5-6 day install process. This time, rather than building and creating a form with materials that can mark the passage of time and the use of hand labor, I am focusing on text, image, shape, and enjoyment. I am back in Grand Rapids Michigan, at the Kendall College of Art and Design, marking the first time I have been back to a former installation site to create a new work. I am hoping this becomes a tradition. Maybe I could return yearly or bi- annually to make new works to all previous venues. It has been a solid two years since I first became ’smitten with the mitten’, as they say around these parts, but it all seems like a blur given the sheer volume of things that have happened in 24months. I will say that the old Kendall Gallery will forever hold a special place for me since I was on a ladder installing there when I got the call in September 2011 that I had won a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant. Time flies and here we are. This time, through the generosity of Kendall College and project sponsor Icon Signs, I am expanding my Field of Good Fortune Project. In 2011 the human scale fortunes were placed modestly along a foot path in downtown Columbia South Carolina. This time I have expanded and modified the piece re-titling it “Campaign of Good Fortune”. This new title is to directly engage with the spirit of the Artprize festival. The campaign being an excuse to create a variety of signage, and other objects encouraging folks to simply enjoy reading a fortune( a noble political cause if ever there were one). So far things have moved along as expected and rather than quietly weaving, stacking or arranging in a gallery, I’ve been pounding drilling and shaping metal signs outdoors. I’m looking forward to the next phase when I can begin distributing some of my official campaign signs around the city.
